You’ve heard it plenty of times before: learning shouldn’t stop because it is summertime. In fact, summer is a great time to practice and strengthen many of the skills students have learned the previous year because there is less pressure. To help keep the learning going, we’ve compiled a list of fun summer learning activities for middle school and high school students that they can do during summer break. It doesn’t matter if you are teaching summer school or extended school year, at home with your own teen, or even tutoring this summer, there are some great activities here for everyone.

Summer Math Activities for Teens

Summertime math packets are a great way for middle and high school students to review topics covered the previous school year, and to start working on concepts they will learn in the upcoming one. Many of these resources contain a mix of review and preview problems that teachers can assign to incoming students before classes begin.

Summer Science Activities for Teens

Science activities like at-home experiments, nature journals, and others are perfect for keeping teens’ science skills sharp over the summer break — even without access to a classroom or a lab. Teachers can provide a list of simple and safe experiments that can be done at home with common household items, or encourage students to keep an observation journal, where they can document the plants they find, animals they encounter, and weather patterns.
