One to one correspondence. Cardinality and ordinality. These are all important initial mathematical concepts. But just as foundational is correct number formation. We’ve created this bundle of number-tracing worksheets to help you in your instruction and as students practice.
What’s on each worksheet?
Each number-tracing worksheet shows the number with arrows showing how it should be formed (you’ll see little numbers as well; numbers after one indicate that you should pick up your pencil). Students will trace the number across the first line and then write the number on their own on the remaining three lines. There’s also a space for them to write the corresponding number word and a quick activity where they color some objects (for example, they’ll color three donuts on the “3” page).

How can I use these number-tracing worksheets?
We made these for you to use as you see fit, but we do have a few ideas for you:
- Instruction: Use these sheets to introduce each number. Put them on the document camera so you can model how to form the numbers correctly.
- Independent practice: After introducing each number, hand each student a copy of the corresponding worksheet to complete at their desks.
- Centers: Provide a variety of these worksheets for students to do during a rotation.
- Homework: After some instruction, these can be done independently, which makes them excellent options for sending home.
- Intervention support: If you have a student who you notice is forming numbers incorrectly (the “8” is usually tricky, for example), you can pull a specific worksheet to have them practice.
